August Weenaas, who was president from 1869 to 1876. Another Norwegian, Mrs. gave college a painting Helge, Sverdrup Ekrheim, of the coat of arms of the Sverdrup family of Norway. The family produced two presidents for the college Georg from 1876 to 1907 and his son, George, from 1911 THORKELSON Religion Editor to 1937. She is a niece and cousin of the two. Other features of the program were reminders of the college's roots in Norway.

Bishop Kaare Stoylen of Kristiansand, whose father, also a bishop, represented the Church of Norway at Augsburg's 50th anniversary in 1919, brought official greetings as the Norwegian Church's representative to the centennial. Minneapolis Mayor Charles Stenvig, an Augsburg alumnus, said King Olav of Norway asked him to bring greetings to the college. Stenvig recently visited the king. A Norwegian opera singer, Olav Eriksen, sang, accompanied by Knut Nystedt, Norwegian composer who was commissioned to compose the Augsburg centennial work, a cantata, "Lucis Creator Optime." The world premiere of the work will be given at 4 p.m. Sunday at Northrop Auditorium.

The Minnesota Orchestra, the Augsburg Choir, Eriksen and Nystedt will participate. Nystedt was one of 15 persons to receive Augsburg centennial silver medals at the banquet. Dr. Oscar A. Anderson, Augsburg president, also presented the medals to two former Augsburg presidents, Bernhard Christensen and Leif S.

Harbo, and to 12 other persons. Also honored were Luthard O. Gjerde, chairman of the centennial committee; Leonard F. Ramberg, chairman of the board of regents; Gov. Harold LeVander; Stenvig; Dr.

Walter H. Judd, chairman of the Augsburg President's Board of Advisers; Bishop Stoylen; Fredrik A. Schiotz, president of the American Lutheran Church; Robert Bjorklund, chairman of the centennial building fund; Gerda Mortensen, dean of women at Augsburg for 41 years and centennial executive secretary; Carl H. Chrislock, author of the centennial history, and Melvin A. Helland, translator of Sverdrup writings.

Dr. Anderson, in turn, received a silver medal from Dr. Gjerde, who presided at the banquet. Twelve persons brought greetings at the dinner, including Mrs. Thomas King, who substituted for her father, Gov.

LeVander. Others represented the 44t MRS. Edward J. Rowland, 22. 1720 19th Av. American Lutheran Church, the University of Minnesota and Augsburg's past presidents, faculty, alumni, students and regents. Dr.

Anderson, in his response, said Augsburg was ready to move into the second century "with great expectations and with confidence in God." He said Augsburg would strive to be a free Christian college, would seek academic excellence, would stress those liberal arts needed to be a full person and would endeavor "to make the fullest possible use of the great potential that exists in this community." A gift of $10,000 was presented to the college by the Aid Association for Lutherans, a fraternal insurance society headquartered in Appleton, Wis. Making the presentation was Cyrus Rachie, an Augsburg regent and official of the aid association. The money will be used to erect flagstaffs on the campus along Interstate Hwy. 94 and a large sign on the college's Urness Tower so passersby will become aware of the college's location. Dr.

Anderson said flags of the United States, the Christian Church, Augsburg College, city of Minneapolis and the United Nations will be flown from the flagstaffs. About 350 persons attended the banquet in the college center. Apartment flash fire kills six NEW YORK, N.Y. (UPI)Six persons, including four children, were killed Wednesday when a flash fire roared through a Brooklyn apartment crowded with people watching the World Series on television. The blaze was believed to have been started by a chlid playing with matches.

Six persons were trapped. Two others fled by jumping from windows. The victims, trapped in one room, were identified as Virginia Jones, 27; her son, Seton, Joseph Chase, Robin Chase, Martha Corprew, 58, and her granddaughter, Roberta, 5. THREE LOCATIONS Damage in state fires placed at $300,000 Associated Press Fires in three different parts of 1 Minnesota Wednesday caused an estimated total damage of $300,000. About $125,000 damage was caused when an oil stove in a small steel building at Red Wing, exploded while workers were loading a Mississippi River barge with flour.

Firemen kept the flour mill safe, but the small steel building owned by Red Wing Milling Co. was destroyed. One box car loaded with sacks of flour was also destroyed, and another empty box car was badly damaged. A conveyor structure and loading equipment used put flour into barges and railroad cars were also ruined by the flames. At Spicer Wednesday Ed and Vi's Supper Club was destroyed by fire.

The building was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bloomquist. Firemen from Spicer, Willmar and New London fought the blaze which also destroyed a public self-service laundry and the Bloomquist home in the same building. The loss was estimated at about $75,000.

Fire caused some $100,000 damage Wednesday evening at the Bemidji Boat manufacturer of boats and canoes and fiberglass hoods for snowmobiles. It was believed the fire was caused by an explosion at the plant. Ten employees escaped serious injury. Owners David and Harold Vogel said it would be a year before the company could resume operation. Water resources director named Dr.

Guy J. Kelnhofer who has been doing water resources research at Georgia Institute of Technology, has been named director of water resources planning and basin coordination for Minnesota. He will work in the State Planning Agency. From 1957 to 1962 he was director of community planning in the Minnesota Department of I Business Development. Lawrence E.
