Casas experienced lingering pain in the rib area when rotating his torso, which delayed his progression. Once Casas' slight swings lead to normal swings in a live batting practice, the Red Sox should have a better gauge for his return. He had originally planned to be ready when eligible June 21, but that has been pushed back to early July.

Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Delivers as pinch hitter

Valdez entered Wednesday's game as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-1 with a walk, a double and two RBI in an 8-6 win over Philadelphia.
Valdez delivered a two-out, two-run double as a pinch hitter for Jamie Westbrook, giving the Red Sox a lead they would not relinquish. He remained in the game and played second base. Since a wave of infield injuries led to him becoming the starting second baseman against right-handers, Valdez is 5-for-22 with a home run, two doubles and seven RBI over eight contests.

It was a rough night from the start, as Pivetta allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base and surrendered two runs in each of the first and third innings. The four walks were a season high, and he allowed at least one baserunner in every inning. Pivetta has been inconsistent this season, with six starts of two or fewer earned runs and three starts yielding five. On the season, Pivetta owns a 3.88 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 55:13 K:BB in nine starts and lines up against the Blue Jays next Monday.

Tasked with protecting a three-run lead in the ninth inning, Jansen allowed Bryce Harper to score after a leadoff double but was able to lock up his first save since May 26. While it was a long stretch between save chances, Jansen is now 10-for-11 on the season and has not blown a save since April 16. Cora said that Abreu still feels some minor discomfort with his right ankle when running in a straight line, but the outfielder is doing much better. The White Sox returned Drohan to the Red Sox on Wednesday after he cleared waivers, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Since the White Sox picked up Drohan in the Rule 5 Draft before designating him for assignment last week, he had to be offered back to the Red Sox for $50,000. Boston has elected to pay that rate to return Drohan to his original organization. The left-hander has been limited to 9.1 innings this season -- all in the minors while on a rehab assignment -- after he underwent left shoulder nerve decompression surgery in late March. Drohan will likely report to Triple-A Worcester, but it's unclear if the Red Sox will have him work out of the rotation or the bullpen.

Portland placed Jordan on the IL on May 12 after he fractured his left ring finger. Prior to being shut down with the injury, the 21-year-old slashed .283/.342/.414 with two home runs and 16 RBI over 111 plate appearances with Portland.
