Melissa Booker was born on July 17, 1936 to Gabriel Louis Hurt and Daisy Cleveland Hurt in Granger, Texas. Melissa was the youngest of five children.

Melissa was baptized at an early age. For many years she was a member of St Paul Baptist Church in San Angelo. She remained a member of St. Paul until moving to Austin and joining Greater Swenson Grove Baptist Church.

Following in the footsteps of her older brother Marvin and sister “Nellie”Jo, she attended Huston Tillotson College where she became a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She went on to become one of the first black graduating classes to earn a Bachelor Of Arts Degree from the University of Texas. In 1973 she earned a Master of Arts Degree from Wayne State University. Later, Melissa earned her Psychologist Certification and License to become a Psychological Associate.

They say that love is better the second time around. This was true for Melissa, when the love of her life Nathaniel Booker literally waltzed in and they married 6 months later on March 29, 1969. They remained together until January 18, 2021. Her career began with the Texas Employment Commission as a Social Worker and then she went on to work for the San Angelo Independent School system as a Child Psychologist. She retired from the Round Rock Independent School District about in 1997. She was compassionate about the welfare of children and was a true advocate.

Mrs. Booker had a special love for her community and social services. She was a member of the Le Coterie Organization and an active member of her Sorority. She also was a member of a Bridge Club for many years in Austin, Texas.

Melissa was preceded in death by her father Gabriel Hurt, mother Daisy Dabney, brother Thomas Marvin Hurt, sisters Nellie Jo Gordon and Mary Patterson, as well as her husband Nathaniel Booker.
