Free Guy 2 may or may not see the light of day — it isn't even in development yet, and star Ryan Reynolds has been cagey about the possibility of a follow-up. In case you forgot (after all, Free Guy came out a while ago) Reynolds play a character named Guy, who one day realises that he's an NPC (Non-Player Character) in a video game called Free City.
Guy discovers that the future of Free City is at threat from the imminent release of the game's sequel, so he teams up with programmers Millie (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Joe Keery) to save his home and his fellow NPCs.
While it's not based on a video game, it's easy to see how Free Guy could spin out into a franchise, but whether that will happen remains to be seen. Here's what we know about a potential sequel, and how Free Guy sets it up.
Free Guy 2 plot: How Free Guy ending sets up Free Guy 2
The first film ends with a victory for those living in Free City, their sentience finally being allowed to evolve. Still, there's no direct setup for a sequel in the ending (or any credits scenes) but it could pick up years later and centre on how Guy and the other Free Life characters have evolved, potentially delving more into the 'is AI alive?' angle of the first movie.
Antwan (Taika Waititi) is sure to hold a grudge too, so he could be back to cause more trouble for Millie in real life and Guy in the video game world. It could also be somebody totally new out to sabotage the success of Free Life.
What would be interesting is how Free Guy 2 could mock the culture of sequels and IPs in the same way the first movie jokes about how nobody wants original movies.
Director Shaun Levy has thought about a sequel and even has a title in mind based on a joke of Antwan's.
"My favourite thing in Free Guy is we have Taika [Waititi's] character in an original new movie literally mock the possibility and value of releasing something new. It's so rare that a studio lets you make a big-budget new movie," he explained.
"If we make Free Guy 2, it will be titled Albuquerque Boiled Turkey. If you've seen this movie, you'll understand that joke. It is 100% Free Guy 2: Albuquerque Boiled Turkey, based on one of seven million improv lines by Taika Waititi."
Free Guy 2 release date: When can we expect Free Guy 2?
Disney has yet to confirm Free Guy 2, so there's currently no release date for a potential sequel. If it does happen though, we could expect a bit of a wait.
In March 2023, Reynolds told Variety: "There is the potential to do a sequel to Free Guy, which would be fun... I would love it. But also like, does everything f***ing have to be a sequel? I don't know.
"Sometimes it's OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone go home... So you know, there's a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, 'Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one...'
No, the first movie validates the first one and then you can leave it at that. So I don't know, we're still talking about it."
Besides this, Reynolds is hard at work on finally getting Deadpool 3 started. If Free Guy 2 is greenlit, the earliest Free Guy 2 it could start would be 2023, leading to a 2024 release at the earliest.
Comer also has a busy schedule, so don't expect a surprise Free Guy sequel reveal anytime soon.
Free Guy 2 cast: Who's coming back for Free Guy 2?
If a sequel happens, it'd have to be with Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer back as Guy and Millie, aka Molotovgirl, respectively.
They'll likely be joined by the other cast members who made the first movie such a joy, including Joe Keery as Keys, Lil Rel Howery as Buddy, Utkarsh Ambudkar as Mouser and, hopefully, Taika Waititi as Antwan.
We could also see a return for Reynolds' second character Dude and various supporting players in Free City such as Camille Kostek as Bombshell.
It seems they wouldn't have much trouble getting all of the cast back, according to Reynolds. "We all hope that we get to do this again. Either in this form as a sequel or something else," he enthused.
"We're lucky, a couple of people I've got the opportunity to work with multiple times, and I'm hoping that if not in another Free Guy movie, it's in another movie or another form."
Free Guy 2 trailer: Any Free Guy 2 footage yet?
Since it hasn't been confirmed yet, it won't be a surprise to learn it hasn't started filming, so there's no footage yet. Just go and rewatch Free Guy instead, for now.
